Honda EU2000iA Portable Inverter Generator

Generators can be useful in a huge variety of circumstances. When an emergency comes up, for example, and general electric power is lost, having a good generator on hand can not only help you to stay comfortable, but can also save you a lot of trouble and expense as well. For example, powering a refrigerator or freezer can potentially preserve several hundred dollars worth of food – while if your furnace or heating system depends on electricity, then if you lose your power in the winter, a generator can prevent even more expense by keeping your pipes from freezing and bursting.

The Honda EU2000iA Portable Inverter Generator, encased in a brilliant crimson casing and looking as slick and professional as a modernistic suitcase, is a high-quality, quiet, compact generator that can satisfy small power needs – ranging from running a computer or TV and refrigerator during an outage, to operating power tools on your boat or at your worksite.

This Honda generator provides 2,000 watts of power at a maximum, and is rated at 1,600 watts. The power is supplied at 120 volts, and is generated in a clean “inverter” fashion, meaning that you can use it to power such sensitive equipment as computers (both laptop and desktop), scanners and other computer accessories, and variable-speed power tools. The fuel-saving “eco-throttle” design of the Honda EU2000iA allows the machine to run for 9.6 hours on a single gallon of gasoline, helping both the environment and your pocketbook. A full tank runs for 9.6 hours at ¼ load, and for 4 hours at a full workload.

The EU2000iA can be paired with another identical generator to double the available power. On its own, the machine can provide electricity to a few power tools, a computer and its peripheral devices, a refrigerator, a small air conditioner, a microwave, or similar small-demand electrical mechanisms. Weighing in at just 47 pounds, it can be easily moved from place to place by a single person in reasonably good condition.

The use of a four-cylinder engine in the generator is the key to its quiet operation. When running, the decibel level of the EU2000iA is only 53 to 59 dB, which is slightly less than the sound level of an ordinary conversation. The sound is incessant, of course, so it is somewhat more intrusive than a discussion is, but it will not bother you while powering a few appliances during a power outage, and other people near you at an anchorage will not be disturbed unless you run the generator in the open late at night.

Honda generators, it should be noted, are rather more expensive than some other company’s generators.  However, it comes with a longer warranty – three years – than many of its competitors, it is designed to work well with transfer switches (which are needed to prevent dangerous feedback into the power lines during an outage), and can provide direct current (DC) output for recharging batteries as well – all part of a compact, fairly light, and highly effective package.
